About Gillian Lee Smith

My personal aesthetic appears in all the various forms my work takes whether it is costumes, illustration and artwork or accessories. Baroque and Victorian periods are especially evident in my designs and work often delves into my obsessions with dreams and memory, dolls and puppets, the expression and characterization of our nature.

My work often describes a character and the development of this can take many varying forms. I find myself consistently drawn to opulence and decay, gold and rust, beautifying the figure, or illustrating the harshness of life. I have worked on pieces which I have beautifully hand painted and embroidered to illustrate the lavishness of a costume and in contrast have used distortion of the figure and images of the grotesque as artwork on printed leather to depict angels and demons.

Graduating in Performance Costume from Edinburgh College of Art in 2005, I have since been working as an artist workshop tutor. Currently based in Nottingham.
